Molton mattress protector versus fitted sheet

For a mattress protector, most people will use the word molton. The term molton is derived from the verb moltoneren and comes from mollis, which means soft in Latin. Moltoneren is a technique in which fabric such as cotton and polyester is roughened, making it feel softer and fluffier. This is how the word for moltons came about! The technique promotes the waterproof and moisture-regulating properties. This treatment is important for a mattress protector or molton fitted sheet, so that body moisture is absorbed into your mattress as little as possible. Regular fitted sheets differ from moltons in this respect and let more moisture through. The roughening also makes a molton thicker than a fitted sheet.

So, a molton feels wonderfully soft and is excellent at regulating moisture. Are regular fitted sheets necessary? Absolutely! A fitted sheet is just as necessary and more pleasant to sleep on. The roughened fabric of a molton is woolly and soft, but does not feel smooth. That roughened feeling can irritate your skin. In many cases, a molton is also made with a higher percentage of polyester than a regular fitted sheet, which quickly becomes too warm to sleep on.

How to choose the right molton fitted sheet

Our range includes molton fitted sheets from Vandyck. A Dutch brand that is a leader in the field of bedding and uses high-quality materials. All your bedding affects the quality of your sleep. Even the molton, even if this is the bottom layer. That is why it is important that you choose the right molton. Below you can read what to look for when purchasing moltons.

    Different sizes

First of all, it is important that you choose a molton in the right size. If you buy a molton that is too big, this can cause folds and bunches that are not comfortable. If you buy a molton that is too small, you will not be able to get the protective sheet around your mattress, despite the help of the elastic band. The different sizes of moltons that you can choose from at Bath&Living are 1 person, 2 person and lits jumeaux. The molton that is suitable for your bed depends on your mattress size.

A single molton is suitable for mattresses with a width of 80 cm to 100 cm. The length can vary from 190 cm, to 200 cm to 210 cm and even 220 cm.

A 2 person molton is used for a small double or queen size bed. This means a width of 140-160 cm, a minimum length of 200 cm and a maximum length of 220 cm.

The largest size molton is lits jumeaux. You use this if your bed is at least 180 cm wide and maximum 200 cm, also called a kingsize bed. The length is the same as with a smaller 2 person bed. Namely 200 cm, 210 cm or 220 cm.

The corner height of your mattress

In addition to the width and length, the corner height is also an important dimension when choosing your new molton mattress protector. The standard molton from our range is suitable for mattresses with a maximum corner height of 30 cm. Due to the elastic all around, the molton fitted sheets stay well around the mattress. Due to this generous height, the moltons even fit around the extra thick mattresses that you often see with box springs.

    High angles

Sometimes our standard moltons even fit around a mattress and topper at the same time because of the high corners. A good mattress is at least 15 cm thick and on average 17-20 cm. A topper has an average thickness of 5 cm to 10 cm. Added together, this could therefore still fall within the maximum height. Make sure you have measured your mattress and topper correctly, to avoid mistakes.

    Molton for a topper mattress

Are you using a topper on top of your mattress? Then you need a different type of molton for the right fit. There are special topper protectors for this with a lower height of 15 cm. This is the maximum height, so this molton fitted sheet is also suitable for a topper of 10 cm. These moltons also have an elastic band all around, so that you can easily put them on the topper and they stay in place.

Molton for a split topper mattress

If you have an adjustable bed, you probably also have a split topper and are looking for a molton with the same split. You can also find this at Bath&Living. These split topper protectors are suitable for split toppers up to a maximum of 15 cm high. Just like the other moltons, this molton also has a handy elastic band.

    Material of the molton

The molton is the bottom layer of your bedding , which does not directly touch your skin. However, it certainly matters what a molton is made of and this can have an effect on a good night's sleep. Some materials are warmer than others. So if you get cold quickly, your personal preference is different than for someone who sweats a lot. Vandyck makes moltons from different materials, each with their own unique properties.

    Cotton moltons

The Vandyck Molton Stretch is a heavy-duty protective fitted sheet with stretch. The top (or pile) of the Molton Stretch is made of 100% cotton with a weight of 210 grams/m². The fine stretch is created by the 20% polyester on the bottom of the molton and is supported by the elastic all around. The polyester is therefore on the side of your mattress. The other 80% of the bottom is cotton. The wrinkle-free Molton Stretch fitted sheet is available for a mattress and a topper, with or without a split.

    Terry cloth molton

The other mattress protector in our collection is the Vandyck Tencel Multi Stretch. This is a terry fitted sheet made of 80% tencel and 20% polyester. Tencel consists of natural materials from eucalyptus trees. The eucalyptus fibers have a cooling effect, which is extra nice in the summer or for people who sweat a lot while sleeping. With the Tencel Multi Stretch, there is no moltoning of the fabric. In this case, the Terry terry weave ensures excellent moisture absorption. A terry molton is also wonderful to have on your bed in the winter.

    Moltons for your pillows

While you are busy protecting your mattress, think about the rest of your bed. For example, the pillows. You lie with your head and hair on your pillow all night, so it has to endure quite a bit. Especially because the skin of the face is often the most sensitive, you want to keep your pillow fresh and hygienic. You can do this with a special molton pillowcase. This has a higher waterproof and moisture-regulating capacity than your regular pillowcase. Especially if you have a sleeping pillow that you cannot wash, it is important that you protect it with a molton.

Both moltons described above have matching pillowcases. So both the Molton Stretch with 100% cotton on the top and the Tencel Multi Stretch made of terry cloth with cooling eucalyptus. Both moltons are suitable for regular pillows of 60 x 70 cm. The Molton Stretch is also available in 50 x 70 cm and the Tencel Multi Stretch in 50 x 60 cm with a height of 10 cm.

    Washing molton

Although you do not touch your molton directly while sleeping, it is important to wash it regularly, especially if you have an allergic reaction to dust mites. The moltons from our collection can be washed at 60 degrees, which helps combat dust mites. Do you not have this problem? Then washing your molton every other week is probably sufficient, depending on how much you perspire. You can put the moltons in the dryer at a low temperature.
