Pillow: How to choose the perfect pillow?
A good pillow ensures that you can sleep comfortably. And a good night's sleep is an important pillar for your overall health. This makes choosing the right pillow in addition to a good mattress very important. Which type of pillow you can choose best depends largely on your sleeping position. The best pillow is also not the same for people who sleep on their stomach as for back sleepers and side sleepers. And then you probably also have a personal preference regarding the different types of materials that are available for the filling and the ticking. We are happy to help you buy your ideal pillow.
The right pillow for your sleeping position
Most people have a favorite sleeping position, despite some tossing and turning in their sleep. Either on your stomach, or on your back, or you are a real side sleeper. Your sleeping position is an important factor when choosing your mattress and pillow. It is important that your sleeping pillow supports your head and neck well. There is a different pillow for each sleeping position. For example, side sleepers need a higher pillow than back sleepers and for a real stomach sleeper a high pillow is not at all convenient. Read below which pillow is the right pillow for you.
Pillow for stomach sleepers
If your favorite sleeping position is on your stomach, a low and soft pillow is the best option. This keeps your head and neck neutral in relation to your back, which will prevent annoying aches. There is even a special type of pillow for people who sleep on their stomach. This pillow is soft, adjustable in thickness and also extra ventilating. A good sleeping pillow with ventilating properties is a very suitable pillow for you as a stomach sleeper, because you are more likely to end up with your face in your pillow.
Pillow for back sleepers
Do you like to sleep on your back? Then you need an average pillow in terms of height and firmness. In order to optimally support the neck, a good pillow for back sleepers should not sink in too much, but also not be too high. This is to prevent the head and neck from being tilted in relation to the back. Some people who sleep on their back like the type of pillow with extra firmness in the neck, but this is not strictly necessary. Others like a contour around the shoulders, so that the center of gravity of the head is brought to the center of the pillow. This promotes the sleeping position, which means you will turn less in your sleep.
Pillow for side sleepers
If you are a side sleeper, there is a big chance that you sleep on a pillow that is too soft or too thin. Side sleepers need a higher pillow than stomach or back sleepers. You want your neck to be optimally supported and your head, neck and back to be in a straight line. That is why a firmer pillow is important for this sleeping position. You can also opt for a pillow with a cut-out for the shoulder, depending on your personal preference. A down pillow may be less comfortable for side sleepers because they are pressed flatter by the weight of your head. A pillow that retains its shape somewhat is better in this case.
Pillow type
As you may have read, not every type of pillow is suitable for every sleeping position. That is why there are all kinds of different types of pillows for side sleepers, back sleepers and stomach sleepers. And also special pillows such as anti-allergy pillows and pillows with a contour at the neck and shoulders.
The shapes of sleeping pillows are not always the same. A standard pillow is 60x70 cm, full in the middle and lowest at the corners (pointed pillow). However, this is not the best pillow for everyone. That is why there are also pillows with other sizes and shapes.
Anti allergy pillow
Even with an allergy to dust mites, for example, you can enjoy a good night's sleep with special pillows. For example, the pillows from the Vandyck Ergonomic series are anti-allergic. The cover of other anti-allergy pillows from our range has been treated with AEGIS Antimicrobial Technology. This prevents you from coming into contact with dust mites and bacteria. The following pillows from our range have undergone this treatment:
Allergy Free soft, medium and firm pillow
Ventilation BSK, soft and medium pillow
Pressure Relief Pillow
Cool pillow
Box cushion
A box pillow has a raised edge, which gives the pillow a more rectangular shape. This allows the edge of the pillow to retain its shape better, which can be nice for a side or back sleeping position. How firm the edge and the rest of the sleeping pillow feel depends on the type of filling. For example, a box pillow with 90% down will give more than a box pillow with only 15% down or synthetic fibers. These are the box pillows from our range:
Premium Box Short Fiber pillow
Premium Box 90 pillow
Pure Nature Box pillow
Cushion with shoulder contour
You will find various pillows with shoulder contour in our range. This is intended to lie against with your shoulders so that the pillow more or less embraces your neck. This type of pillow offers firmness for the head, because the center of gravity is brought to the middle. This ensures a firmer sleeping position and therefore a more restful sleep with less turning. These are the sleeping pillows with shoulder contour from our range:
Pressure Relief soft pillow
Feel Good soft pillow
Feel Good medium pillow
Cool pillow
Allergy Free soft pillow
Allergy Free medium pillow
Shape-retaining cushion
Some pillows with shoulder contour and firm filling retain their shape reasonably well. But if you are specifically looking for a dimensionally stable sleeping pillow, it is best to look at the Ergonomic pillows. This series of pillows from Vandyck consists of three heights (10, 12 and 14 cm), all three in soft and medium firmness. This type of pillow is filled with 100% natural latex with a permanently high density, in other words a firmer pillow than all other pillows in our collection. Latex also offers a firmer feel than a memory foam pillow, although memory foam pillows are also dimensionally stable. A dimensionally stable pillow will mainly be a good pillow for the side sleeping position and in some cases also for the back sleeper.
Different types of materials
Our range consists of pillows with all kinds of materials, each with its own specific properties. Not only the filling material is important for the unique quality of a sleeping pillow, the ticking is also important. The ticking is the outside of pillows and duvets. Although you will still use the pillowcases of your duvet cover, the type of material of the ticking does have an effect on your sleeping comfort.
Filling
Our collection of Vandyck pillows includes both down pillows and pillows with synthetic filling. The pillows with down have a difference in filling weight, which gives a diversity in comfort from super soft to firm pillow. The down that is used is pure white goose down, supplemented with small goose feathers. A down pillow is easy to shape, which is a big advantage for some people. Down offers wonderful warmth, which is nice in the colder seasons. But down is also nice to use the rest of the year, because it is well ventilated. What you do have to take into account with a down pillow is that it will lose volume a little faster and is not machine washable.
Our down-free pillows are designed with great care by Vandyck to meet different needs. Think of natural fillings such as latex and java kapok. Or synthetic fillings such as (balls of) polyester fibers and different varieties of Dacron Comforel. We also have a collection of adjustable pillows where you can easily add or remove filling yourself to achieve the desired comfort.
Material ticking
Most Vandyck pillows have a cotton cover. Cotton is naturally good at absorbing moisture and is breathable, making it an ideal material for your bed.
However, some pillows have deliberately been made from polyester. For example, the Ventilation series consists of a combination of twill cotton, 3D woven polyester and microfibre. The use of polyester fibres has created an open structure that, in combination with the type of filling, ensures a fresh and dry night's sleep.
